DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS FOR NDT OF WELDING JOINTS

There are a lot of non-film systems for NDT appeared in last 10 years. They have some advantages and disadvantages.
In the E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute were created X-ray TV system “scintillator-CCD” type and electromechanic X-ray TV scanner.
The X-ray TV systems with a digital processing of images, not requiring the intermediary carriers of information, were intensively updated. Except the low cost of equipment, this technology, named as “flash-radiography”, i.e. radiography without intermediary carriers reduces the time of testing and displays the digital image of test object on the monitor screen. These systems can perform the radiography testing both of stationary and also mobile objects in a real time.
The relative sensitivity of testing of X-ray TV systems “scintillator-CCD”, developed at the E.O.Paton Electric Welding institute, corresponds to the sensitivity of the film radiography. The resolution of these systems can be from 2 up to 5.5. lp/mm.
The electromechanic X-ray TV scanner based on a mini CCD sensor S10811-11 from Japan firm Hamamatsu Photonics. This scanner could move X-ray transducer across the surface of the longitudinal objects on long distances. We have a program that stitch detached images into one longitudinal defectogram. Transducer moves across the surface by dint of means of a precision mechanic with step engine and coordinate movement recording.
The advantages of such types of systems are:
– the lower cost of equipment;
– directly acquiring a digital image of control object;
– saving images in digital form;
The described systems are one of the variants of “flash-radiography” and disputably occupy the important place in comparison of cost and quality. The in-process visual obtaining of results of testing and relatively low cost of this detector leads to the fact that the systems of such type are widely spread in different braches of industry.
