Shot peening process results in compressive residual stresses on the surface which improves the fatigue performance of the components. Fatigue life of several aircraft parts is improved by shot peening. Thus, development of easy, rapid and reliable non-destructive methods for estimation of residual stress, and thus fatigue performance of the components will be very useful for aircraft industry. Recently the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) method has gained importance for non-destructive characterization of ferromagnetic materials. In this study, the correlation between MBN emission and fatigue life of the shot-peened AISI 4140 steel samples was investigated. Various samples having different residual stress state were produced by applying shot peening with different Almen intensities and coverage percentages. After measuring several MBN parameters on the samples, fatigue tests were performed by tensile-tensile cyclic loading. The results showed that there is a linear correlation between MBN emission and fatigue life.
