ISO 9712 standard is one of the widest implemented procedures for evaluating and documenting the capabilities of non-destructive testing personnel worldwide. A successful third-party assessment according to ISO 9712, leading to the issuing of a certificate, confirms that an individual fulfils the qualification requirements for a method, level, and industry or product sector, but it does not authorise that individual to perform NDT. The authorisation to operate can only be given by the employer when the certificate holder demonstrates the skill to properly perform employer specific NDT tasks. In the end, the employer is responsible for the results of all NDT operations, hence for product quality and safety. The fourth edition of ISO 9712 provides more information on the employer`s responsibilities, the operating authorization, and NDT experience than its predecessors, but they remain main issues in the certification process and can cause tension or disagreements between the certification bodies and the employers. In this paper, I address such conflicts and present our expectations from the fifth edition of ISO 9712 to resolve them.
