User Guideline for the Practical Application of Modelling and Simulation for NDE

Can simulation and modelling software be used by ordinary NDE technicians to solve their clients problem? Simulation and modelling software for NDE ranges in complexity from an extended spreadsheet to full function finite element packages. A Dutch joint industry project comprised of mostly SME companies and their clients set out to formulate guidelines for getting most value out of this variety in software tools. The project goal was to analyze the state-of-the art, disseminate knowledge and write a recommended practice.
The consortium set out to solve 4 actual inspection problems contributed by project participants with 6 different software tools, coming from petroleum industry, civil structures and distribution utilities. NDE technologies involved were Phased Array ultrasonic testing, Time-of-Flight diffraction testing and Eddy Current testing. Knowledge about the software tools was transferred in workshops from the simulation service provider to the practitioner company. Lessons learned have been captured in a user guidelines for practical application of modeling and simulation in NDE.
The resulting user guideline includes lists of input parameters and their significance for performing simulations, flow charts for selection of tools and recommendations for education and training of simulation and modelling technicians. The paper will describe the work performed, lessons learned and an overview of the guideline.
The project was performed by the research and development foundation (SKOP) of the Dutch society for Quality Surveillance, Inspection and Non-Destructive Testing (KINT).
